The Tel Dan stele gives strong evidence for the existence of King David and his kingship over Israel some 3,000 years ago. The stele, or stone slab found in 1993, contains writing carved in the Aramaic language and is believe to date from the 9th century B.C.

The writing states that "a person killed Jehoram, the son of Ahab, king of Israel and the King of the House of David. The writings agree with the account in the Second Book of Kings of the Old Testament. (Second Kings 8)

The stele is the most significant reference to King David and his kingship over Israel outside the Hebrew Bible.

The source of the stele is believed to be Hazael, who is the Aramean king who spoke the Aramaic language and conquered Israel's kings according to the Second Kings account. The Tel Dan site "Mound of Dan" is located in northern Israel in the ancestral land of the Tribe of Dan.
