Sun Spinning Too Slowly
by Owen Borville

Astronomy, Physics

Scientists have observed that the Sun’s outer layers are spinning more slowly than its interior and this phenomenon has puzzled researchers for decades.

Recent studies indicate that the slowdown is due to a process called photon-braking.

During this process, the Sun emits photons, which are particles of light. As these photons leave the Sun, they carry away a tiny amount of angular momentum.

Over time, this gradual loss of angular momentum causes the Sun’s outer layers to slow down. This effect is more pronounced in the outer 5 percent of the Sun’s surface.

This discovery helps scientists understand not only our Sun but also other stars in the universe that might experience similar slowdowns.

Therefore, this research indicates that light can influence the rotation of the sun.
