Cell Phones Usage In Schools: Should there be a Ban?
by Owen Borville
May 28, 2024

Cell phone usage in k-12 schools has been a major issue in recent years in the U.S. and around the world.

Students use the phones to keep up with their parents and friends. However, the cell phone usage is preventing students to focus in classes and complete schoolwork.

Many want to see the phones banned in schools and many have schools have established bans. However, many students continue to use the phones despite the bans, particularly high school students, making the job for teachers of these students extremely difficult.

Students use the phones to chat with parents and friends, so that their mind is not focused on the classroom activity. Students also have access to music and entertainment applications on their phones, which causes a major distraction for the students and teachers.

Teachers have difficulty doing their job, which is to engage and educate the students, as cell phone usage continues in schools.

Many blame the cell phone usage to an addiction caused by the COVID pandemic several years ago, when students were attending classes online at home, and this addiction has continued until today.

Many parents want to have access to their children through the cell phones and these parents do not want the phones to be banned.

However, there must be a comprise to be made to engage students in the classroom activity without being distracted by their cell phone usage.

Cell phone rings and noises from media content often distracts the class and makes the job of educators extremely difficult.

While many blame the students and their parents for the issue, little has been mentioned about the responsibility of the cell phone companies and their apps that appear on the phones.

Little has been done by the cell phone companies to work with the schools to find a solution to the issue, despite the many lawsuits filed against them.

However, the powerful corporate tech oligarchy in the U.S. is difficult to work with, which is one of the unfortunate results of capitalism.

As new technology emerges in today's world, the integration of this technology into the education institutions, which have not changed much since the 19th century, is difficult.

Schools and schoolteachers must find a way to integrate new technology into the school curriculum to enable students to learn and prosper, and prepare students for future employment, while at the same time monitor the students' work and make sure that their assigned work is being done.

Schools across the world deal with this issue and teachers continue to leave their jobs because of the cell phone issue.

There must be a way that schools and parents can monitor the students academic work so that learning can occur and the students can be trained for future careers.

The issue continues to be discussed in every school in the world, and solutions must be found before education becomes completely obsolete.
