Prince Edward Island Geography and Landscape by Owen Borville March 2, 2026

Prince Edward Island’s landscape is defined by rolling hills, red sandstone cliffs, extensive coastlines, and glacially shaped lowlands, rather than mountains or deep gorges. It is one of Canada’s gentlest and most pastoral provinces, with geology and landforms that reflect its sedimentary origins and history of erosion.

Coastline and Landforms: Prince Edward Island has over 1,100 km of shoreline, shaped by bays, coves, dunes, and beaches. Its most iconic features include:

Red sandstone cliffs—iron‑rich and easily eroded, giving the island its distinctive red soil and coastal bluffs. Sand dunes, especially around Cavendish and Greenwich, forming some of the island’s most dramatic natural scenery.  Barrier beaches and spits, constantly reshaped by wind and waves. These coastal systems dominate the island’s geography and are central to its national park landscapes.

Elevation, Hills, and the Absence of Mountains: PEI is not mountainous. Its highest point is only about 140–142 m above sea level.  The terrain consists of: low, rolling hills, gently sloping uplands, broad agricultural plains, because the island is made of soft sandstone and glacial till, it lacks the resistant bedrock needed to form mountains or deep gorges.

Rivers, Lakes, and Wetlands: PEI’s waterways are small but numerous: Short rivers that flow gently to the sea, often widening into estuaries. Freshwater wetlands and ponds, but few natural lakes due to the island’s geology. Tidal estuaries that support rich ecosystems and shellfish beds. The island’s rivers do not carve steep valleys; instead, they meander through soft soils and low relief landscapes.

Geology and Rock Types: The island’s geology is dominated by: Red sandstone (iron‑oxide rich), which weathers into the famous red soil. Glacial till, deposited during the last Ice Age, shaping the rolling topography. Soft sedimentary layers, which erode easily, creating cliffs, beaches, and dunes rather than rugged terrain. This geology explains why PEI has: No mountains, no deep gorges, and rapidly changing coastlines

National Parks and Protected Areas: Prince Edward Island National Park is the island’s primary national park, known for: Coastal dunes, Red cliffs, Barrier beaches, Wetlands and forests, It protects some of the island’s most iconic landscapes, including Cavendish, Brackley–Dalvay, and Greenwich. 

How the Landscape Shapes the Island’s Identity: PEI’s geography supports: a strong agricultural tradition (thanks to fertile glacial soils), tourism centered on beaches, dunes, and coastal scenery, and a pastoral, gentle landscape often described as the “Garden of the Gulf”
