Parable of the Humbled Dinner Guest

Parable of the Humbled Dinner Guest: Luke 14:7-11

Bible

The parable of the Humbled Dinner Guest describes a situation as Jesus was invited to dinner at a prominent Pharisee's house. While at the dinner, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table. Then Jesus told this parable:

When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. Luke 14:8-10.

Jesus then gives this word of advice:

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Luke 14:11.

The teaching of this parable can be applied to life in general and teaches that it is better to be humble than to be proud. Those who humble themselves will be rewarded. Just like Jesus humbled himself as a servant, we should humble ourselves and serve others. This is the path that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven.
