A new layer of the Earth has been discovered inside the Inner Core region of the Earth, according to a recent publication.
Previously identified layers of the Earth include the thin outer crust layer, the denser, softer and hotter mantle layer, the liquid outer core, and the solid inner core.
Siesmologists study the path and behavior of seismic waves that are emitted during earthquakes and travel throughout the interior of the earth.
The direction of travel and velocity of these seismic waves can help seismologists determine the structure and density of subsurface earth layers, and thereby helping identify the thickness and identity of sections or layers inside the earth.
The most recent research indicated that a new layer inside the inner core is different in atomic structure and density than the rest of the inner core layer, and therefore a new layer has been identified.
Up-to-fivefold reverberating waves through the Earth’s center and distinctly anisotropic innermost inner core. Thanh-Son Phạm & Hrvoje Tkalčić. Nature Communications, volume 14, Article number: 754 (2023).
