Magnetic Fields Predicted by Russell Humphreys
by Owen Borville

Physics, Astronomy

Russell Humphreys is a physicist known for his work in advocating young Earth creationism.

In addition, he has proposed a model for the origin of planetary magnetic fields based on the idea that the planets were initially created as spheres of water with aligned magnetic moments.

Dr. Humphreys proposed that the spins of its hydrogen nuclei in the water were at first aligned in one direction. That would produce an initially strong magnetic field for each object in the cosmos. With time, the energy and intensity of these fields decreased due to random motions and cosmic events.

This model suggests that the magnetic fields of planets, including Earth, have decayed over approximately 6,000 years.

Humphreys’ model has been used to predict the magnetic fields of various celestial bodies, such as Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Some of these predictions were later confirmed by spacecraft observations, such as those from Voyager 2.

His work contrasts with the more widely accepted dynamo theory, which explains planetary magnetic fields through the motion of conducting fluids within planets.
