Jesus Fulfilled the Great Light Scripture of Isaiah

Bible

Jesus Christ fulfilled a scripture by the prophet Isaiah written eight centuries earlier concerning the Great Light. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he left Nazareth and went to Galilee and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali, which fulfilled what was said through the prophet Isaiah (Matthew 4:12-14). Capernaum was a small fishing village located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee established by the Hasmonean Jews a few centuries earlier.

Matthew records the fulfilled scripture in verse 4:16:

Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned (Matthew 4:15-16).

Isaiah describes the prophetic scripture concerning the coming of the Great Light as follows:

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:1-2.

Matthew also describes that Jesus began to preach on repentance and the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven at this time (Matthew 4:17).
