The jabuticaba (also spelled jaboticaba) is the edible fruit of the jabuticabeira (Plinia cauliflora) or Brazilian grapetree.
The jabuticaba fruit grows directly on the trunk of the tree, a phenomenon known as cauliflory. The fruit is purplish-black with a thick, astringent skin. Inside is sweet, white or rosy pink gelatinous flesh, reminiscent of a slip-skin grape.
The jabuticaba tree is slow-growing and evergreen, reaching up to 15 meters (49 feet) if not pruned. Its leaves start salmon-pink and turn green as they mature. The tree prefers moist, rich, lightly acidic soil but can adapt to various conditions.
Flowers emerge directly from the trunk, adding to its unique appearance. Jaboticabeiras may flower and fruit multiple times throughout the year in their native habitat. These tropical to subtropical trees can tolerate mild, brief frosts (not below 26°F or -3°C). Their compact, fibrous root system makes them suitable for growing in pots.
The name “jabuticaba” comes from the Tupi word “îaboti,” meaning “the place where tortoises are found.” It could also refer to the fruit’s white pulp, described as “like turtle fat.”
