Is the United States a Democracy? Is There a Democracy in the World?
by Owen Borville

Is the United States a democracy as it claims to be?

Why is it that there is a popular vote for the office for President, but the Congress' Electoral College chooses the President?

Virtually all elected U.S. congressmen are members of one of two major political parties. Therefore, it is virtually impossible for a third party candidate or independent candidate to win the presidency.

There is little chance that enough congressmen would choose someone who is not a member of one of the two major political parties.

So the U.S. has a two party political system. There is little chance that a grassroots independent candidate or a third party candidate could receive enough support from the Electoral College to be allowed to become president.

Even if a third party or independent candidate somehow won the popular vote, it is unlikely that the Congress would choose this candidate.

Therefore, the presidential election is basically a two man race. I don't see much choice here. I don't see much democracy here.

Other countries have a popular vote with a laundry list of candidates and the highest vote getter wins the election, which seems more democratic. Not in the U.S.

The President and Congress can declare war without voter’s approval. How is this democratic? Many Americans oppose the wars that are funded by the U.S., as many Americans are struggling with unaffordable housing, medical costs, unemployment, and high cost of living.

The U.S. government does many things without voter’s approval. No health care for all Americans? The U.S. Government does not take care of its people, while it funds wars in other countries and takes orders from leaders outside the U.S.

Foreign (non-U.S.) groups are controlling and influencing the decisions of the U.S. government without the will of the American people.

A 2010 bill became law in the U.S. that allows unlimited campaign financing. So one billionaire could by out every congressman and the presidential election. A few billionaires are influencing U.S. elections.

Billionaire bank financers and defense contractors are bribing the U.S. Congress to declare war so high profits can be made off of America's war addiction.

Do the American people really have a say so in what the U.S. Congress and President does?

Then there is the Supreme Court, which can overrule anything the Congress and President does. But who chooses the Supreme Court Justices? The President, who is not elected by the people but by the Electoral College.

The U.S. Congress and President has accomplished little in regards to the Southern border crisis, the gun violence epidemic, the drug war, high inflation and cost of living, unaffordable housing and healthcare, unemployment, and many other issues.

So when are we going to have a U.S. Congress that actually works for and serves the people of the United States? When will we have a true democracy?
