Iowa Geography and Landscape by Owen Borville March 1, 2026

Established 1846. Mississippi River to the (east), Loess Hills along the Mississippi, Ledges State Park canyons on Des Moines River, Pikes Peak State Park View on Mississippi River bluffs, Spirit Lake and Iowa’s Great Glacial Lakes in NW Iowa, Upper Iowa River Canyons, Maquoketa Caves St. Park (E), Dunnings Springs Park (E), MS River at Effigy Mounds N.M. (NE), Crystal Lake Cave (E), Eagle Point Park Dubuque (NE), Three Mile Lake (S), Gitchie Manitou State Preserve (NW).

Iowa’s landscape is shaped far more by glaciers, rivers, and ancient seas than by mountains, giving it a surprisingly varied mix of rolling hills, river bluffs, impact craters, and lake‑studded plains. The state has no true mountain ranges, but its geology and landforms are richer and more diverse than many people expect.

The Des Moines Lobe is a young glacial landscape in central Iowa marked by moraines, knobby hills, and poorly drained plains. Clear Lake and Storm Lake sit along its edges. The Loess Hills are wind‑deposited silt forming steep, sculpted bluffs along the Missouri River in western Iowa. These hills are among the deepest loess deposits in the world.  The Paleozoic Plateau (Driftless Area) is the northeastern Iowa escaped the last glaciation, leaving rugged limestone bluffs, deep valleys, and cold‑water streams. The Southern Iowa Drift Plain features rolling hills carved by older glaciers and long-term erosion.

Rivers, Lakes, and Water Features: Major rivers include the Mississippi River (east), Missouri River (west), and Des Moines River (central). These rivers define much of the state’s topography and settlement patterns. Glacial lakes such as Clear Lake and Storm Lake formed along the Des Moines Lobe’s margins.  River bluffs and gorges appear most dramatically along the Mississippi, especially near Dubuque and the Driftless Area.

Geology and Rock History: Bedrock ages increase from west to east, ranging from Cretaceous in northwest Iowa to Cambrian in the east.  The Manson Impact Structure is a 22‑mile‑wide asteroid crater in Pocahontas County that dramatically altered local geology and would have caused mass destruction across a huge region at the time.  Glacial deposits dominate much of the state: till, outwash sands, gravels, and loess.

Parks, Natural Areas, and Scenic Regions: Maquoketa Caves State Park features karst topography with caves, sinkholes, and limestone formations. Backbone State Park features rugged dolomite ridges and deep valleys. Effigy Mounds National Monument is a national monument (not a national park) preserving Indigenous earthworks and Mississippi River bluffs.

Landscape Character: Much of Iowa is rolling prairie and farmland, shaped by glacial smoothing and rich loess soils. Scenic highlights include bluffs above the Mississippi, steep loess hills, glacial lakes, and broad river valleys. Photographs from across the state show everything from cornfields on gentle hills to dramatic river overlooks.

Iowa’s geography features glacial landforms, ancient bedrock, river‑carved valleys, and wind‑built hills. While it lacks mountains, it offers dramatic relief in places, especially along its major rivers and in the Loess Hills and Driftless Area.
