Solutions to Gun Violence in the U.S. and the World
by Owen Borville
June 15, 2024

The rate of gun violence in the U.S.A. is much higher than any other industrialized nation on Earth.

There is a strong gun culture in the U.S. that dates back to the original settlement of the U.S. by European settlers and is associated with American ideals of freedom and independence. However, there are many ways that the high level of gun violence in the U.S. could be lowered and innocent lives could be saved.

The first solution is to make gun access more difficult for those who are most likely to misuse guns. Criminals released from jail are many times more likely to obtain a gun illegally than a law abiding citizen. Any criminal allowed to free will very much likely obtain a gun in the future. These individuals must never be freed into the public in order to preserve the safety of the American people.

There must be more lawsuits against the federal government that allows gun ownership and gun manufacturers to manufacture and distribute these weapons. The Congress and the Supreme Court have the authority to regulate gun sales. Americans should hold their government more accountable for the high levels of gun violence.

Ban military grade assault rifles that are used as weapons of war. Mentally ill people are encouraged to buy and use these weapons against innocent people. No private individual should own a weapon of war, and definitely should not be allowed to carry this weapon in public.

Open carry laws in many states of the U.S. make life very dangerous outside of the home. Americans should not have to live in fear and the U.S. should do more to protect the American people.

In addition, there must be more parental accountability to hold parents accountable when their children, regardless of age, misuse guns. The homeowner should be responsible for any gun kept inside the home and the homeowner should be held accountable if anyone who lives in the home or visits the home obtains possession of a gun and misuses the gun.

Gun ownership should be limited to property owners. Commonly in American history, property owners were given full rights and non-property owners were given less rights. Property owners are usually older in age and more mature in regards to owning guns.

There should be higher age limits for gun purchases and ownership. Psychologists commonly say that their research indicates that the human brain is still developing until age 25. There should be strong precautions for anyone under 25 years of age purchasing, owning, and possessing a gun. A high percentage of those who misuse guns are under 25 years of age.

There should be more security in public areas, and gun sales should be taxed to pay for more security in public places. Why are there not security guards in every public place? Tax the gun sales to pay for more security.

Mentally ill people should be banned from buying and owning guns, and there should be stronger background checks to determine who is unfit to purchase and own a gun. The government should ban anyone making public threats from buying and owning guns. Require gun owners to take classes on gun safety. Find out who these people are and if there are any signs of mental illness. Suggest trusted gun owners volunteer as security guards.

Ban backpacks in all schools. Every student must be checked for guns or weapons, including a full body search. Every person entering the campus must be checked. Blame the stubborn gun lobby for this inconvenience.

The U.S. gun lobby, including the gun manufacturers and gun lobby groups, have too much power. The Congress should limit the power of the gun lobby to protect the American people and save lives.

The government should limit political campaign finance donations from large single donors, such as approved in the 2010 law allowing unlimited campaign finance from single donors buying out our congressmen (such as gun manufacturer donors).

The U.S. should look at other countries' success reducing gun violence like Australia, Canada and the UK.

Also the government should ban possession of knives and sharp tools also in public places, like Australia has done.

More security is needed in public places, including more security officers. Taxes from gun sales should help pay for more security in public places.

Americans should not have to live in fear when venturing out of their home, going to work, going shopping, or going for a walk in the park.

The U.S. Congress should listen to the American people if it claims to be a real democracy, otherwise the U.S. is a corporate oligarchy dictatorship in which the largest corporations buy out congressional representatives who were elected by the people.
