A Geographic Information System is a computer system that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information and uses data that is attatched to a unique location.

Much of the information about the world today is associated with a location, and therefore GIS attemps to use this information based on location to analyze the data and find new insights and patterns about this information.

GIS is used not only in geography and earth sciences, but environmental sciences, life sciences, and many other subjects.

GIS creates a map of a particular location and divides this space into base layers, where each layer contains specific data about the location.

This layered separation helps researchers better analyze the data about that location.
