Electric Wood Fractal

Electric Wood Fractal

Science

Electricity makes a fractal branching pattern when applied through wood materials or other solid insulating materials.

This pattern is known as a Lichtenberg Figure and occurs when lightning or an electric current is projected through a material and "burns through" the material.

The procedure to produce a Lichtenberg figure is dangerous and can result in death by electrocution if not properly executed.

This unique pattern produced in wood resembles branching trees, plant roots, or a fern plant.

Lichtenberg patterns also form in liquid and gas mediums.

Lightning can create lichtenberg figures in various materials, including grass. A lightning bolt itself is a lichtenberg figure.

Fulgurite, fossilized lightning, can occur in nature as a mineral deposit as lightening bolt strikes sand.

The lichtenberg figure pattern is repeated at smaller scales toward infinity.
