Dragonfly wing pattern

Dragonfly Wing Pattern Fractal

Science

The wings of the dragonfly are known to feature a geometric pattern that is fractal in nature. Each wing has a distinct pattern just like fingerprints.

The pattern is produced by a network of veins inside the wings that produce the unique-shaped, irregular but geometric sections on the wing, which is is made of a thin membrane.

The veins inside the wings provide strength and flexibility for the wings, which are very lightweight.

One dragonfly wing could have hundreds or thousands of sections, each of which are irregular, different, and unique. No two dragonflies have the same identical wing pattern.

The patterns on the wing are fractal in nature, where patterns are repeated at various scales toward infinity.

The design of dragonfly wings is apparent and has impressed many scientists throughout history, including Leonardo da Vinci.
