Classroom Management Strategies for Teachers to Engage Students
by Owen Borville
June 14, 2024

Classroom activities can help teachers keep students engaged in school classrooms and achieve successful classroom management.

The key to keep students engaged in the class is to create classroom activities for the students to participate in as a group. However, classroom management can be difficult with a large class size.

Some students have behavior issues and only one or two students can ruin a classroom experience. Teachers usually do not have the ability to choose their students.

However, teachers usually can remove a student who refuses to cooperate and send them to another room. However, many classes have several students who misbehave and refuse to cooperate.

The key for teachers is to gain the respect of the students by showing strong control over the classroom. Experienced teachers eventually learn classroom management skills, however, new teachers and substitute teachers can have much trouble with classroom management.

Online games focused on the material can keep students engaged in the classwork and help learning continue. A variety of online games exist where students can answer questions on their laptop related to the class topic and the most successful student will be the one who answers the most questions correctly.

Taking turns calling on individual students to read the textbook out loud can help keep students engaged in the class.

Traditional written assignments commonly include printed worksheets where the students answer questions by handwriting, which could be an individual assignment or group assignment.

Other written assignments commonly include a writing a short essay about a given topic, which is commonly an individual assignment. However, this assignment should not more than 15-20 minutes in length.

Also, the teacher should ask the students questions about the material to keep students engaged.

Earshield noise reduction in classrooms can help students concentrate on work and allow educators and parents to monitor students' work. Devices such as headphones can help shield noise and allow a student to focus on an online assignment without distracting other students. In a noisy classroom, an earshield can help reduce noise and help a student focus on a classroom assignment.

Cameras in the classroom can help educators and parents monitor students' behavior. Any misbehavior by students can be shown privately to administrators and parents. There are differing opinions about this issue and some do not like students in classrooms being videorecorded. However, cameras in the classroom can be a deterrent to student misbehavior. Some have mentioned privacy concerns of students, however, most public places already have cameras installed, including businesses.
