Civil Engineering deals with designing better and more efficient buildings and infrastructure in cities, while also maintaining a healthy and sustainable natural environment. Civil engineering is part of the Creation Mandate (Gen. 1:28) to be successful and help others.

Topics in Civil Engineering

Structural engineering involves the design and construction of all structures, including not only buildings, but all connecting and related infrastructure around buildings and the ground surface material.

The construction of all buildings and man-made structures use the principles of physics to in the design in order to create safe and useful structures for humans.

Architectural engineering is closely related to civil engineering in that the focus is on the optimal structure and design of buildings and structures.

Construction engineering is also closely related to civil and architectural engineering with the focus on the design and creation of buildings and structures.

Transportation engineering involves the design of streets, roadways, highways, airports, and all infrastructure associated with automobiles, aircraft, railways, and water-based travel.

Geotechnical Engineering According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), geotechnical engineers use rock and soil mechanics to investigate the subsurface geologic conditions. These investigations are used to design and build foundations for structures, earthen structures, and pavement subgrades.

Environmental engineering focuses on keeping the environment in which humans live safe and protecting humans by controlling pollution and harmful chemicals and materials that are produced by humans.

Municipal engineering focuses on the optimal design and maintenance of infrastructure in cities and urban areas that humans use and need.

Water resources engineering is the study of the infrastructure used to provide water sources to humans in order to ensure that this infrastructure is working properly and efficiently.

Waste management focuses on the proper and safe method of collection, treatment, and disposing of waste products in cities in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

Surveying in civil engineering involves the measure the features of a landscape in order to construct a map or description of the area.

Hydraulic engineering focuses on the study of fluid mechanics in order to best maintain the water transport infrastructure including waterways and drainage systems, along with man-made sewage systems. Improved methods of transporting water resources over long distances are a main focus of hydraulic engineering, along open channels, and covered pipes and tunnels.
