The Bread of Life Parable: John 6:31-38

Bible

Jesus described himself as the Bread of Life in John 6:35 when his disciples ask "what sign will you give that you are the one that God has sent." Jesus explains that while bread was given to them during the time of Moses, the bread came from God and that just as God gave this bread to his people, he also gave Jesus for his people. The bread is the symbolic representation of Jesus Christ and the manna or bread that God gave to the Israelites could be seen as symbolic of the future Messiah to be sent into the world. Jesus is also explaining that it is not bread alone that gives eternal life, but the True Bread that God sent in Jesus Christ. While the bread given to the Israelites during Moses' time satisfied their temporary need, the True Bread given by Jesus Christ was the permanent and final need fulfilled for the salvation of mankind.

Jesus then replied:

“Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:32-33.

Jesus then declared:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35.

Jesus then explained in John 6:40:

40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” John 6:40.
